Passive Solar Timber Frame Home
Sustainable Passive Solar Timber Frame Home located 14 miles north of Bishop in the quiet community of Paradise, California. With the passion of sustainable building techniques we decided to build using the time-honored traditional workmanship of timber frame construction using reclaimed 100-year-old Douglas fir treslewood timbers from the Great Salt Lake. Not only adding beauty and character the construction technique makes for an incredibly sturdy framework. Throughout the vaulted ceiling construction, the exposed beautiful handy work of the timber joinery can be appreciated.
To continue with green building and efficiency we chose high performance SIPs Panels (Structurally Insulated Panels) for the 6 inch exterior walls and 10 inch thick roof. These panels create a tight envelope to keep the home warm during the winter months and cool during the summer.
Windows Throughout the Home
Windows throughout the home takes advantage of every possible view. Wanting to create a space that allows the “outside in and the inside out” we chose to have large French doors, sliding doors and transom windows along the front to be able to open the home up to the amazing views and clean fresh air.

Healthy Retreat
The central theme of construction was to honor the surrounding land as much as possible, to build small, earth friendly and humanly healthy as possible. The positioning and design strategically takes advantage of the sun angle during the winter for solar warmth and during the summer for cooling. Careful study of the suns travel angle during the winter and summer was calculated into the structures positioning and roof overhang design. Lots of sun in the winter and shade in the summer.

Yoga Practice Space
The study space is simple and open with bookshelves and audio. The design of the room is to practice Yoga. There is a “yoga wall” to practice on as well as ample floor space with large open views to the surrounding mountains and landscape.
During the winter months as a back up to the passive solar system a highly efficient Jotul wood stove provides additional heat. The bathroom and bedroom have additional low energy using base heaters should the need arise.
Incredible Views
Meticulous detail went into the aluminum clad crank window design, not only to take advantage of the incredible views and solar gain but also ventilation. The design effectively moves upper loft air via a bank of transom windows up and out through skylights. Additionally, tall windows are located across the rooms on all ends of the home to cross ventilate. Two ceiling fans are placed strategically to help move air for air circulation for both summer and winter.
Paradise Amenities
Low Impact Living
The kitchen is the center of entertainment offering plenty of counter space. All necessary cookware and dining utensils are provided. The cook top is an ultra modern European Miele induction system. It is highly efficient, boils water under a minute and uses very little energy. It works only with stainless steel or cast iron cookware due to the required magnetics. In keeping with being green there is no microwave or oven. However, there is a energy efficient low water use dishwasher. Of special note are the custom open cabinet designs that are made of local species pinewood, milled in Mammoth and built by a local custom cabinetmaker.

Panoramic Vistas
The Panorama and changing light is hard to describe, we can only say it is big country. Along with solar gain reasons, the house was positioned to view the areas prominent peak, 13,600 Mt. Tom. To the east are the massive White Mountains with 14,252 White Mountain, Owens Valley to the south, which is one of the deepest valleys in the US. The high peaks of the Palisades and Evolution region on the skyline in the distance, the famous Buttermilk Country in the foreground and to the west the deceptively tall 5,000-foot granite escarpment of the Wheeler Crest.

Bedroom with Queen Size Bed
One of the really nice things of Paradise is the adherence of being a dark sky community. This means that homeowners in the area try their best to keep the lighting down to a minimum. The use of indirect exterior lighting prevails and unnecessary interior lights are turned off. The results are a truly amazing dark sky filled with a universe of stars.
Soaker Tub and Shower
To pamper yourself after a days outing the spacious bathroom features a soaker tub. There is also a shower, washer, drying rack and sink basin. The water closet has its separate privacy space.
